5 Ways How Spotify Makes Use of AI

For most people, Spotify is the music home ground. With its connectivity to social media and apps like Shazam, Spotify has become the largest on-demand music service platform and has a history of overcoming many tech barriers using AI and big data.

Spotify has made our discovery of music explorative and allows us the power to access a multitude of music in one place with hyper-personalized music scores.

Let’s explore how Spotify uses AI to curate these experiences with music for you.

Some Fun Facts About Spotify:

  1. Over 100 million tracks
  2. 696 million monthly active users
  3. 7 million podcast titles
  4. 350,000 audiobooks
  5. 100,000 new song uploads

Personalized Recommendations

Spotify has gained a huge follower base with its increase of not only songs, but also other viable audio options like podcasts and audiobooks.

Just a day before writing this article, I was listening to Harry Potter in the audiobook section, and being a paid subscriber, this variety is a plus. But the best part is that I was recommended the audiobook by Spotify’s algorithm.

So, let’s get into how the platform works.

Spotify tracks your listening habits, such as the artists, songs, genres, and suggests content, be it music, podcasts, or audiobooks. It uses the latest machine learning algorithms to suggest these new explorations and adjusts to your liking in real time.

Feeling sad? You can just type ‘sad’ in English or “triste” in Spanish, and you’ll get plenty of suggestions for sad and moody music, or it will base its next recommendation on the song you pick.

Likewise, you search for Hozier and songs in his music category will be listed for you. Or you can search for a Spanish artist like Bad Bunny or J Balvin, and Spotify will recommend other Spanish musicians topping the charts that create music that’s likely to resonate with you.. That’s how specific personalized recommendations on Spotify are. It’s a really cool feature.

The main goal is to keep you engaged with music that you will enjoy. But to truly experience the app seamlessly, ensure you don’t have a slow internet connection. Because no one likes stutters during jam sessions with friends, right?

You can check out Spectrum and get a plan suited to your needs, especially if you like to listen to lossless music. I’ve been using the service, and it’s been a great experience. You can get in touch with their customer support for more details, and if you’re a Spanish customer, then you have an exclusive helpline to reach out to at Atención al cliente de Spectrum.

Spotify Wrapped

This is something we’re all familiar with, right? This feature shows the top songs, artists, and genres in the music we listened to for the year. Though the data may not be exactly accurate, it’s a fun way of knowing and rooting for your artists.

The best part is that this allows a summary and a fun shareable format that you can post to your socials. It has all the details from the artists to the time listened to, and other interesting stats.

It also helps drive social engagement of the platform by sharing about your Wrapped profile.

Spotify DJ Function

Introduced in February 2023, Spotify DJ Xavier, or X, is your personal AI bot for curating the music lists you want to hear. It has the power of personalization technology, generative AI, and a dynamic AI voice.

So, while it isn’t going to set your alarms, it creates a playlist as a DJ would, based on every user’s likes and the music listening patterns they have.

However, it will also recommend and switch genres in between if you wish. It will also help you understand your music, where it comes from, by whom, and even the history of an artist, helping you explore your favorites in depth.

The DJ function also uses the OpenAI tech to give results based on the local music list and relevant natural language comments.

In an article by AimResearch, Emily Galloway, who is the Head of Product Design for Spotify Personalization, has spoken about this feature and said: “ DJ is an entirely new way to listen, and a brand-new format, so there wasn’t a formula to follow when we were making decisions.”

This aimed to tell the viewers that the decisions by DJ and the results that it will take for each person will be a unique journey. This allows all the artists to scale towards different locations and markets, while allowing Spotify to get a big market share.

Discover Weekly

Spotify is one of the best personalization platforms in music. You get a well-curated list according to your needs.

For example, a travel album for when you’re traveling. Or a música de baile (Dance music) in Spanish for when your friends come over. These are specially crafted by the platform’s AI algorithms.

The personalized lists are shown on the first day of the week (Monday) and contain 30 songs that align with the user’s listening habits, language, and other preferences. For example, I love Japanese pianists, and I often get weekly recommendations of new and upcoming pianists with great scores.

This feature also helps new artists show up in your playlist if you listen to their genre. It helps the newcomers gain some traction on the platform and helps people discover something new.

Another example is that I love listening to songs from top anime and K-drama shows. Now my Discover Weekly has songs from Korean bands and new Japanese anime song releases. This can help you find new songs in the categories you listen to.

Likewise, if you listened to Latina Foreva by Karol G, a Colombian singer, you might find reggaeton music scores on your list and other top Spanish music scores like DTMF by Bad Bunny suggested to you too.

But the great thing is, it will not show you something you’ve never even listened to, like for me, that’s punk or rock music.

Spotify Presale

Spotify presale is actually a feature for an artist’s ultimate fans. So, listen up, follow, and download songs from your most loved artists. The more you listen to your favorite artists, the more chances you have of winning a Presale invite.

You can then get exclusive offers and early access to tickets for concerts, live events, and meet & greets, before the actual presale from artists or the venue.

Once you get a code from Spotify, you can get early access to ticket sales before anyone else. This allows you to attend events of your favorite artists.

How Do You Get Spotify Presale Codes

To do this:

  1. Engage with artists’ content (the highest engagement receives codes).
  2. Keep checking your Spotify account settings.
  3. Watch out for emails from Spotify.
  4. Check your email spam folders.

Benefits of Spotify Using AI

Spotify leverages the use of AI to provide its users with many benefits, such as:

  • Delighting audiences through hyper-personalized music scores.
  • Allowing users to make their own playlists for different events and moods.
  • Discovering a variety of content via natural language search.
  • Recommending podcasts and AI-powered translations of them

The Future of Spotify

Spotify has expanded beyond our thoughts in the past two years, but the real question is: what heights it may reach in the future? With the revenue stream rising steadily and expected to reach $2.6bn in 2026, the future will definitely have some more creative inflow.

Some ideas we may see in the future include:

  • New ways of personalized recommendations and usage of generative AI for smarter playlists.
  • The future will be much more than just music. It will incorporate ideas that help users to have fun, heal, and generate emotions through audio and sensory services, e.g., introduction of calming chat rooms with healing therapy in Spas with special curated music and technology.
  • Spotify may allow monetization for its creators, such as producers, writers, singers, and audiobook owners, to earn beyond just streaming.
  • It may allow for social sharing, collaborations, and pushing into new markets.
